Med-Tech Hackathon 2020

Program Outline:

Arc is hosting a Med-Tech Hackathon to help our local health sector better cope with current & future health crises.

The Hackathon is an intensive weekend event, where teams with innovative ideas for hardware or software products, are given the opportunity to pitch their concept, showcase the strength of their team and demonstrate their perceived market opportunity in the medtech space.

The focus of the event is to tackle pervasive problems in medicine and biomedicine with the aid of technology, attracting participants from a wide range of backgrounds: from doctors and scientists to graphic designers, entrepreneurs and engineers.

*This event is offered both in person and virtually and caters for both QLD based and interstate teams.

A list of industry challenges are listed below and teams are encouraged to tackle those challenges!

The event is designed to connect, inspire and test the skill and strength of tomorrow’s innovators in the medtech field.

Who is it for?

It’s open to anyone and everyone to attend! In the past we have hosted a wide range of participants, including: designers, engineers, developers, coders, business minded individuals (finance, law and marketing), social scientists and experienced professionals.
Whether you are a serial entrepreneur or new to the Hackathon world, if you are motivated to build a product or startup and open to new ideas in the Medtech space, then the Hackathon is perfect for you.

Yes, we accept already formed teams that have already developed a product that solves one of the challenges posted!

Register:

October 12th – team registrations close

Challenges:

  1. Fit testing of N95 masks often results in wastage of several masks during the fitting process. Can a reusable solution be developed to help preserve the real masks?
  2. Certain patients in the Intensive Care Unit require being turned face down (prone) due to significant acute lung disease. This position causes pressure areas, especially to the face and eyes. Long term harm can include blindness from ocular pressure. Can face supports be custom designed to limit pressure injuries on the face?
  3. Commercially available virtual reality headsets are not suitable to use on patients who are immersed in a bath during burns treatment and may increase risk of infection due to the presence of non-cleanable components. For use in a clinical setting, headsets must be robust, capable of being disinfected and be suitable for immersion. Furthermore, it is desirable for headsets to neatly manage cables or be wireless and be comfortable to wear in many different settings from lying down to undertaking rehabilitation exercises. Can a virtual reality headset be designed for use in hospitals?
  4. During leg realignment procedures it is critically important to determine the correct position of the hip, knee and ankle during surgery. In general, markers are located at the hip, knee and angle, with a radiographically opaque wire or cable tensioned between the markers to indicate a straight line. Challenges arise from difficulties in keeping the markers at the correct position and measuring the correct angle and rotation of the bones during surgery. Methods to improve this process during surgery would be of significant benefit.
  5. Cutaneous t-cell lymphoma can be treated using radiation methods including total skin electron irradiation. A beam of radiation is directed onto the surface of the skin and challenges occur with delivering a consistent dose and even coverage of the patient’s skin. Furthermore, patient comfort is often poor as they need to hold a series of poses over extended treatment times. The scope of work can include methods of scanning the skin geometry for dosage calculation and planning in addition to the application of the radiation to the patient.
  6. Open Challenge – For This Medtech Hackathons we are open to receiving solutions to industry problems that fall outside of the above mentioned categories.

2020 MVP Accelerator 2

Program Outline:

This full-time 12-week program is designed for early stage-hardware startups that have identified a market need, have a functional prototype and would benefit from access to advanced prototyping equipment and know-how to develop an MVP and secure industry/customer trials.

Program Outcomes:

By completing this program, participants will be best prepared to undertake industry trials and start collecting accurate data on the benefits and scope of use of their products. This program is designed to address the gaps present within existing industry-specific accelerator programs that are not able to adequately assist startups throughout their product development stages.

The program provides the ideal platform to make the transition from an early-stage project to a full-scale business opportunity. Participating startups that arrive with a product with potential, limited market testing, some expertise and a lot of energy, will leave with a validated MVP and a more targeted and clear market strategy as well as high quality material to assist with pitching the product for industry trials.

Investment opportunity:

Startups accepted into the MVP Accelerator Program focusing on clean energy technologies (energy efficiency technologies, low emission technologies and renewable energy technologies) and agtech may be offered seed capital investment from Artesian Venture Capital firm, in return for equity.

Startups developing hardware technologies in other sectors may also have opportunities for investment in return for equity.

We are looking for:

For this cohort, we are prioritising scalable innovative startups developing solutions (with a hardware component) in the clean energy, agtech, medical and water innovation spaces.

While we are prioritising the aforementioned categories, applications are open to all hardware startups that have an initial working prototype.

Why are we different from other Accelerator Programs?

  1. We have 6 dedicated staff members that actively help startups progress in the areas of mechatronics, design and commercialisation as well as the usual mentor workshops
  2. You have access to state of the art prototyping equipment at one location
  3. We have a partnership with Artesian Venture Capital and other investors specifically for Hardware startups
  4. We offer access to our wide range of national and international manufacturing networks
  5. we are inter-state friendly and set up to cater for startups all round Australia

2020 Arc Post-Accelerator 2

Program Outline:

This 12-week program is designed to guide more advanced hardware startups through the critical stages following the completion of an Accelerator program. After startups have developed their prototypes, refined their business strategy and have started to gain interest from potential clients and industry partners, they will need to focus on manufacturing their product and expanding within compatible international markets.

During this program, startups will work on refining their product design for mass manufacturing, establish supplier networks and map out a clear strategy to engage with new markets. Arc will guide startups through these stages by relying on its strategic international partners located in Europe, America and Asia.

Investment opportunity:

Startups accepted into the Post Accelerator Program focusing on medtech, clean energy technologies (energy efficiency technologies, low emission technologies and renewable energy technologies) and agtech may be offered up to $100,000 in seed capital from Artesian Venture Capital firm, in return for a safe note or equity*.

Startups developing hardware technologies in other sectors may also have opportunities for investment in return for a safe note or equity.

Program Outcomes:

By completing this program, participants will be best prepared to run a series A+ capital raise.

The participating teams will receive support in:
